Types of dictionaries12/8/2023 ![]() ![]() Where else would you find a hosbolhookum (an official document issued on royal authority)? The language of Anglo-India was fading when Yule and Burnell compiled their lively and discursive compendium, but it remains today to remind us of the remarkable and often problematic interaction between the British imperialists and the general Indian populace before Partition. In fact, Hobson-Jobson is an anglicisation of an anguished Muslim cry uttered “ in the procession of the Mo-harram”. Henry Yule and Arthur Coke Burnell’s Hobson-Jobson (1886) This dictionary of the English of the Raj was cleverly titled to give the impression that it was compiled by Messrs Hobson and Jobson. But the dictionary soon settled down to include a glorious sweep of English of all types: formal, slang, British, American, South African, etc, and set the framework for national dictionaries across the world.ĥ. The 19th-century editors soon realised that was too grand an aim: there was far too much esoteric scientific vocabulary, for example, that the ordinary, educated chap just didn’t need to know. Oxford English Dictionary (1884-) Our greatest dictionary (I would say that) was planned as a comprehensive index of English, containing every word and meaning ever used. ![]() And he was not averse, as we know, to the odd subjective definition: “excise : a hateful tax levied upon commodities, and adjudged not by the common judges of property, but wretches hired by those to whom excise is paid”. But his agenda shifted from writing a dictionary showing the English language at its peak of perfection to one that captured the language as it shifted. Samuel Johnson’s Dictionary of the English Language (1755) Johnson had little truck, at least in his dictionary, with the discourse of ordinary people: all fours (“a low game of cards”) crack (“a whore in low language” and also “a boaster: this is only a low phrase”). Capitalising on this, BE’s dictionary gave the book-buying public their first chance to decode the frightening language of the “sturdy beggars” (beggars legally fit to work) or the homeless, shiftless soldiers returning from the European wars: famble-cheats (“Gold-rings, or Gloves”), member-mug (“a Chamber-pot”). BE’s New Dictionary of the Canting Crew (1699) The streets of Britain’s big cities were teeming with rogues and vagabonds in the 17th century, as least as far as BE – the forever unknown compiler who only ever revealed these initials – and his publisher would have us believe. But Cawdrey made a sound beginning: they say that the first step is the hardest.Ģ. What’s worse, he wrote it for “the benefit & helpe of Ladies, Gentlewomen, or other unskilfull persons” who had neglected to enjoy a classical or grammar-school education, but who needed to know the meaning of oppilation (stopping) and saboth (rest). He left out all the easy words you’d already know (there’s some sense in that) and focused on the “hard words”. He didn’t produce what we’d think of as a dictionary. Robert Cawdrey’s A Table Alphabeticall (1604) Dictionaries of English didn’t exist before 1604, and so schoolmaster Cawdrey was blazing a trail. ![]()

Prepaid expenses in accounting12/7/2023 ![]() Still, the remaining half relates to the next accounting period. Half of the insurance premium paid will be booked as an expense in the same accounting year in which it is paid because it is only related to that accounting period. These expenses are initially recorded as current assets, but benefits will be realized in future years. It represents the company’s expenses that will provide benefits in the coming accounting period but are paid in advance by the company. Amazon kindle fire hd 7 cover12/7/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() You should be able to enjoy browsing the web, getting work done and even some light gaming, but don't expect anything graphically demanding to run well.īattery life: Samsung's Galaxy Tab A7 lasted just over 13 hours in our battery rundown test, which is longer than Apple's iPad lasted in the same test. Performance: The Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 (SM6115) processor and 3GB of RAM inside the Tab A7 provide enough speed for everyday activity, but be ready to notice some sluggishness when flipping between apps or running anything demanding. It's a lower resolution than the iPad and it doesn't get as bright, but you'd have to set them side-by-side to notice. You get nice thin bezels and a premium-feeling aluminum chassis that does bend a bit if you really try, along with USB-C port for charging and a microSD card slot and headphone jack, two things the modern iPad doesn't offer.ĭisplay: The 10.4-inch (2000x1200 pixels) display on the Tab A7 is more than good enough for browsing the web or watching movies. But it's a hair cheaper, and it comes with some features the iPad can't match, like expandable storage. The Tab A7 wasn't built to compete with the best tablets on the market, but with nice thin bezels and useful features like facial recognition, it's competitive with the 2021 iPad despite costing $100 less.ĭesign: Weighing 1.1 pounds and measuring 9.8 x 6.2 x 0.3 inches, the Galaxy Tab A7 looks and feels like an iPad. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 is one of the best cheap Android tablets you can buy because it delivers decent performance in a premium, elegant design for not a lot of money. In our tablet battery test, which tasks the slate with endlessly surfing the web over Wi-Fi with its display set to a brightness of 150 nits, the iPad 2021 lasted a good 11 hours and 59 minutes.ġ2 hours of tested battery life is nothing to sneeze at, and it means you can count on being able to carry the iPad 2021 through a day of work or school without needing to plug in. Even now, several years later, you should expect respectable performance.īattery life: Apple advertises the iPad 2021 as lasting up to 10 hours on a full battery but, as is often the case, the company is commendably conservative in their battery life promises. ![]() When the tablet was new I noticed almost no lag when playing the latest games, noodling around in apps, or editing photos. Performance: Apple put an A13 Bionic chip inside the 2021 iPad, the same chip that drives the iPhone 11 family of devices. That’s a bit worse than its predecessor or the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7, a more expensive Android tablet. ![]() When we tested the iPad 2021 in our lab we found the screen’s brightness maxes out at 494 nits in the center of the display, but it gets significantly less bright near the top and bottom, delivering an average maximum brightness of 473 nits across the whole panel. It does reflect a lot of light though, so don't expect a great experience using it outside in direct sunlight. This is also the last iPad Apple sold with a headphone jack, so if you like plugging in your own cans this is probably the best iPad to buy.ĭisplay: The 10.2-inch (2160 x 1620 pixels) Liquid Retina display on the 2021 iPad is bright and colorful, making everything you do on it look good. Its thick bezels may be an eyesore, but if they bother you just remember you're saving over $100 by accepting them. Admittedly, the newer iPads have a sleeker design with thinner bezels and no headphone jack, but the newer design and speedier processor aren't necessarily worth the extra cost.ĭesign: The 2021 Apple iPad looks like an iPad, albeit with a slightly thicker, chunkier design than the most modern iterations. The 2021 model is recommended for those on a budget because it's the last one Apple sold at a starting price of $329, before jacking the price up over $100 with the $449 2022 model. The 2021 Apple iPad is a solid all-around tablet that runs just about any app from Apple's App Store with ease. ![]()

Superbia tick tick boom12/7/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() After eight years of relentless work, he struggles to finish his rock musical opera ‘Superbia’ while working a day job at a diner.Īlthough perpetually broke, Jonathan gets by with a bit of help from his friends. On January 26, 1990, his 30th birthday, aspiring playwright Jonathan is consumed by the dread of existence in his SoHo apartment. The movie follows a performance of the titular musical, which chronicles Jonathan’s artistic struggle during the production of his previous musical. If you are busy recollecting the final moments of the movie, let us ponder upon the ending. With this acknowledgment, you should brace yourself for a spirited freeform journey with a heart-shaped hole in the middle. Furthermore, Tick, Tick… Boom!sends tired artists and confused young adults an “ I see you” message - a pat on their backs, pushing them to continue living in, through, and for art.“Everything that you’re about to see is true, except for the parts that Jonathan made up,” clarifies a voiceover. Jonathan Larson might not have seen how influential he became in the genre of musical theater, but his musical served as his successful attempt to wake up the succeeding generations, which he continued with Rent. But Tick, Tick… Boom! reminds its audience that art shapes and changes the world, outliving everything and everyone else, including the artists themselves. Consequently, it is easy for artists to downplay their relevance in the world, especially if, as time passes by, they only get older, but they have nothing concrete or practical to show for it. The “ starving artist” lifestyle that emanates from an obsessive relationship with one’s craft has always been looked down on, with people simply dismissing it as a phase, a hobby, or a waste of time. Apart from showcasing the messy and sometimes draining process of creating musicals, Tick, Tick… Boom! is a celebration of every artist’s perseverance and creativity. It seemed like Jon truly followed Rosa’s advice to write about what he knows, as there are themes and elements in Rent which are derived from his life.ĭespite knowing that Jonathan Larson would die a few years after the film’s setting, the movie ends on an optimistic note, with Larson soon to begin writing his next musical, having been rejected and encouraged over and over again. As it managed to combine Broadway tradition and contemporary music, Rent both attracted and represented younger generations who yearn for their voices to sing and be heard. Although Superbia is Larson's attempt at bringing social relevance into Broadway, Rent is more grounded, dealing with immediate concerns and reflecting real-life struggles. But at the time, the idea of a far-fetched future where people behave differently might have seemed off-putting for producers not to mention, even the performers in Superbia’s workshop, led by Princess Switch’s star Vanessa Hudgens, struggled to understand what they were singing about. Instead, as Jon explained in the film Tick, Tick… Boom!, Superbia is a satire set in a distant emotionless, poisoned future, where “ the vast majority of humanity spend their entire lives just staring at the screens of their media transmitters, watching the tiny elite of the rich and powerful, who film their own fabulous lives like TV shows.” The concept is eerily familiar to the current state of humanity and the kind of entertainment consumed, hinting at reality TV shows like Keeping Up With The Kardashians. It also inspired local and international productions and earned a massive following and countless pop culture references. This popularity and acclaim established Rent as the musical that revolutionized the modern genre, launching the musical careers of artists like Idina Menzel, since known for voicing Elsa in the Frozen franchise. The production also snatched four Tony Awards, six Drama Desk Awards, and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Rent went on to become one of the longest-running shows on Broadway, running for 12 years and grossing over $280 million. ![]() RELATED: How In The Heights' Opening Song Mirrors Hamilton's However, in a tragic twist of events, he died on the day of Rent’s first performance, suffering from an aortic aneurysm. ![]() During the rehearsals for Rent’s off-Broadway production, Jonathan experienced severe chest pains and shortness of breath, but since his test results came back normal, his doctors misdiagnosed it as flu, or simply a result of stress. This was briefly touched on in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s movie - the irony of Jonathan worrying about wasting his life and chasing his dreams before his time is up, only to receive immense posthumous success. Tick, Tick… Boom! focused heavily on Jonathan’s crisis as he turns 30 unfortunately, he would suddenly pass away five years later. ![]()
